Very Good. 8vo-over 7¾-9¾" tall. pp. 268. Book in red boards in excellent, unmarked condition, dust jacket has marks, slight fading, general age-wear, but whole. Previous owner's name and date of purchase handwritten on front page. A study of the relationship between two highly educated women who shared their lives in a love affair that broke all the rules of late 19th/early 20th century USA. Mary Woolley was a professor of Biblilcal history and President of Mt Holyoke College until 1937, and Jeannette Marks, originally her student, was a writer and an English professor at the college. Despite an attempt to end the relationship when they realised how socially unacceptable it would be, the love affair survived, although their subsequent attempts to conform to social norms without relinquishing their love was costly for them both.
