Most commentators look at the issue of immigration from the viewpoint of immediate politics. In doing so, they focus on only a piece of the issue and lose touch with the larger picture. In "Migrations and Cultures", Thomas Sowell shows the persistence of cultural traits in particular racial and ethnic groups and the role these groups' relocations play in redistributing skills, knowledge, and other forms of "human capital".

Not many large-scale studies of such topics hit all the marks, and Dr. Sowell acknowledges it in this book as he has in others of his. Absolutely Everything cannot be fit into one tome or even in a multi-volume set. While I disagree with some minor points in his analyses, overall it's a quite balanced and reasonable assessment on a big, often contentious subject. It's a worthy read for those interested in the topic or in related topics.
