But "the craft" were coming fast enough now; and as they ranged past the American ships, in the midst of the deep and awful pause before the battle, a puff of white smoke came from one of the ports of the Eagle, followed by a stunning report, and a shot plowed its way across the water. It fell short, however, and the British ships came majestically on, without noticing it, until the Linnet was abreast of the Ticonderoga. Then the British sloop-of-war roared out her whole broadside of long twelve-pounders. But every shot fell short except one, that whizzed across the deck, and struck the chicken-coop in which Cap'n Paul Jones was confined, knocking it to kindling-wood. The game-cock, instead of being frightened, was rejoiced to get his liberty, and jumping up on the gunslide of the other Paul Jones, which was an eighteen-pounder and a she, to boot, flapped his wings fiercely and set up a loud crow of defiance at the British ship which he seemed to consider had delivered her whole broadside at him. The sailors burst into roars of laughter and cheering, that shook the Ticonderoga's deck, and echoed across the bright water to the British ships, where it was answered by a rousing British cheer. Nor did the cheering disconcert Cap'n Paul Jones any more than the broadside. Then, he flew up into the rigging, where he continued to crow defiance at the banners of England.
