'Breathless suspense ... taut action ... manages to achieve depth as a novel without ever letting up its adventurous pace ... A grand book for every le Carre reader' The New York Times Book Review Lewis Cane fought with the French Resistance during the Second World War and gained a justified reputation as a tough and resourceful man. So it's no great surprise when one of his ex-Resistance comrades, now a successful lawyer in the early 1960s in Paris employs him to escort a businessman from Brittany to Liechtenstein for a crucial meeting. There are just two problems: the man's associates don't want him to get there, and the police have a warrant out for the man's arrest on a charge of rape. For Cane, it becomes a desperate race across France, fighting against resourceful and ruthless adversaries and avoiding the forces of law and order every step of the way ...

Gavin Lyall wrote a number of international thrillers in the 60s, and, as far as I'm concerned, 'Midnight Plus One' tops the list.
Set in 1960s Europe, still haunted by the ghost of WWII, the book relates the first-person account of a British investigator, Lewis Cane, hired to escort a wanted millionaire through France and Switzerland into Liechtenstein, in time to attend a stockholders meeting which will dissolve the company if the millionaire is not there to cast his vote. Assisted by one of the three best gunmen in Europe, who, unhappily, is also an alcoholic, and pursued by agents of the party who wishes to dissolve the company, Cane, a former Resistance member, must rely on skills he developed during the war as he tries to deliver the millionaire and his personal secretary to Liechtenstein in time.
I first read the book as a teenager and have returned to it a number of times since then. Lyall is not as sensational as Ian Fleming, but his stories are better--less fanciful, more suspenseful, with better characterization. The action set-pieces vibrate with tension, leaving film-like impressions in your mind. This book is still one of my all-time favorite thrillers.
