Ovni dans le monde de l'edition, il est le fruit d'un dispositif editorial hors norme: plusieurs centaines d'images, reproduisant les details epoustouflants de plus de cent peintures, sculptures et dessins, forment un recit visuel apparente a la BD, ou chaque image s'accompagne d'une phrase, ou d'une amorce de commentaire, dont la continuite produit une veritable et nouvelle histoire de l'artiste. A egale distance du livre d'art classique, doctoral, et de l'album d'images, enfantin, le Michelangelo d'Obalk dialogue autrement avec son lecteur: il s'agit tout d'abord de derouler un texte, dont chaque segment de phrase est illustre, sur le mode de la conversation. Ce n'est donc ni une BD, ni un roman photo, d'abord parce qu'il n'y a pas de personnages ni de bulles (ou tres rarement), mais aussi parce que seule la voix du narrateur court de case en case - et dirige la mise en pages. Bref, c'est un essai edite sous l'apparence d'une BD. Il decoule de recherches conjuguees dans les champs de l'histoire de l'art (et de la critique d'art), du cinema documentaire (puisqu'il a inspire le scenario de la serie Grand'Art diffusee sur arte), et du graphisme (la forme BD ). On y retrouve le ton d'Hector Obalk, critique, lyrique, volontiers subjectif, parfois poetique, toujours pedagogique et non denue d'humour. Ce premier volume passe en revue l'oeuvre de Michel-Ange depuis ses debuts (1490) jusqu'au plafond de la chapelle Sixtine (1508-1512), en passant par le Bacchus du musee Bargello, la Pieta de Saint-Pierre de Rome, le fameux David de Florence et le tondo Doni du musee des Offices. En 2017, le second volume sera consacre aux oeuvres posterieures a 1512, incluant les Esclaves du Louvre, le Moise de Rome, la chapelle Medicis de Florence, les Prisonniers laisses inacheves, la fresque du Jugement dernier de la chapelle Sixtine, la Pieta Bandini et tant de dessins exceptionnels.
