In this first translation in book form of his work, Latin American social commentator Carlos Monsivais presents an extraordinary chronicle of contemporary life south of the Rio Grande, ranging over subjects as various as Latino hip hop, Dolores del Rio, boleros, and melodrama. Monsivais's chronicles are laconic and satirical, taking as a constant theme the conflicts between Mexican and North American culture and between modern and traditional ways of life.

This collection is great, especially if you are in tune and knowledgeable when it comes to the complex tapistry of Mexican history and culture. Anything by Monsiváis is recommended (en español, preferable). I saw this one in a bookstore in Morelia, Mich., in English, but there are articles and essays published here and there by Monsiváis that add a lot more depth to the iconic representation of Mexican culture.
What is utterly annoying, however, is the "synopsis" provided on this site. How someone who, in a tiny paragraph, manages to butcher five spellings, two of them famous names, is allowed to publish is beyond me. Let me correct: The muralist is David Alfaro SIQUEIROS (not "Siquerios"), and the famous writer, author of El llano en llamas and Pedro Páramo, is Juan RULFO (not "Ruldo"). Monsiváis wrote Amor Perdido (not "perdio"); more words: entrada (not "entrade"), and pudor (not "pudo"). Come on! Get it together!
