Here, the author takes the opposite viewpoint and primarily considers the material. In particular, he continually addresses the question of how the microstructure of the material affects its response to the environment. The contents of the book fall into two parts and cover a number of examples. The various types of environmental attack are discussed in the first part, while the second part considers the most commonly used structural alloys and the types of environmental degradation that they most commonly suffer. The author has tackled this subject in a manner that the reader will find both informative and stimulating. This monograph will serve as a useful introduction to the metallurgical side of problems of environmental failures.
