Which of their many masters, do you think, will so much as remember their names in their old age, far less lay them" in their graves with tears of love and respect? But there is a still higher reason for encouraging long and faithful service, and it is this: an example of it is commended by being found in God's own Word, where, in the same book which contains the histories of apostles and prophets, of kings and great men, still more of our blessed Lord Himself, is the simple record of a nurse who did her duty long and faithfully. And such service means that the person who gives it is dutiful and affectionate, long-suffering and meek, patient, gentle, and self-denying--in short, full of love. Yes, to have served long and well in one family is a sure token of not a few Christian graces, not a little real goodness. Such servants serve their earthly masters well, because they also "serve the Lord Christ." One word more on the other side before we close. It is a very different thing to try and prevent the children leaving their places every time anything goes wrong with them, or they hear of more monay and more liberty elsewhere; this is a very different thing, I say, from letting them stay in some place where, by example or otherwise, they are likely to learn harm. The place may be comfortable, the wages may be good, your girl may have the chance of rising and getting on better than you could have expected for her; but how will it be in the end?
