Seller's Description:
With 18 Steel Engravings. Very Good. Issued Without a Dust Jacket. Book. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. This is the First edition of this title and it was sold by subcription only. There were two states of the title page. In the first state "Douglas" was misspelled. In the second state of the tile page, it was corrected to "Douglass". This is the most typical state the book is found in. This volume has the corrected title page. The rest of the book is first state. In this work Harriet Beecher Stowe profiles the great men of her time and the book has eighteen wonderful plates inserted that have tissue guards. Written right after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, she uses the first 110 pages of the book to detail his life and the assassination. It's interesting to read the reaction of a contemporary. Abraham Lincoln referred to Stowe as "The little woman who started this big war". He was referring to Uncle Tom's Cabin at the time. The book is described as "being narratives of the lives and deeds of statesmen, generals, and orators including biographical sketches and anecdotes of Lincoln, Grant, Garrison, Sumner, Chase, Wilson, Greeley, Farragut, Andrew, Colfax, Stanton, Douglass, Buckingham, Sherman, Sheridan, Howard, Phillips and Beecher". "Beautifully illustrated with eighteen steel portraits". There is a bit of fraying to the cloth at the foot of the spine. Otherwise a very good copy of this important work.
