Not illustrated. 1896 Excerpt: ...and Mr. Gladstone was a member of most of them. He eventually left the Tory party and joined the Liberals in 1851, having drifted away from his party on questions of trade, religious emancipation and foreign policy. He held the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer for the first time in 1852, and made his first Budget speech in the following year. He has been Prime Minister four times. His first ministry (1868--74) is noteworthy for the Disestablishment of the Irish Church, and the passing of the Elementary Education Act and of the Ballot Act. His second term of office (1880--85) was marked by serious disaffection in Ireland and trouble in Egypt, the former culminating in the murder of Lord F. Cavendish and Mr. Burke, the latter in the death of General Gordon. Mr. Gladstone again returned to power in 1886, and, having reversed his Irish policy of coercion, brought forward his Home Rule Bill. An appeal to the country on this question resulted in an overwhelming defeat of the Liberals, followed by the formation of Lord Salisbury's administration which lasted from 1886--92, when Mr. Gladstone came into office for the fourth and last time. He resigned the Premiership in 1894 on account of failing powers of sight and hearing, and soon afterwards gave up his seat as member for Midlothian. He has continued to agitate loudly on behalf of persecuted Eastern races. In addition to his extraordinary activity as a politician Mr. Gladstone has been a prolific author, and has contributed largely to reviews and periodicals. His works deal with political, theological, and literary subjects. His latest publications of importance are a verse translation of the "Odes of Horace" and a complete edition of Butler's Works.
