"Little" Esther Phillips was able to sign with Syd Nathan's King Records in 1951 after little more than a year with Savoy, as her contract with the latter proved invalid. Continuing to work with Johnny Otis, the 16-year-old Phillips cut some of her most important sides on Federal, supported on occasions by Clyde McPhatter and the Dominoes, Mel Walker, Bobby Nunn and the Robins, and blues pianist Little Willie Littlefield.
