Mark Anthony De Dominis was born at Arba in Dalmatia in 1566. He was educated at Loretto by the Jesuits, and proceeded to the university of Padua, where he very soon distinguished himself, both as a student and as a lecturer. He studied mathematics and physics in particular, to such purpose that he was the first philosopher to give a satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon of the rainbow. While still a young man he was made a bishop on the recommendation of the Emperor Rodolph. His first see was Segni, but within two years he was promoted to the Archbishopric of Spalato, the capital city of his native province.
