Seller's Description:
Various. Very Good Indeed. A pleasing first edition copy of Edgar Sheppard's fascinating historical account of St James's Palace; copiously illustrated throughout and complete in two volumes. Examining the notable births and marriages within the palace walls, the lives of the royal residents, and the ceremonies and treasures held in the building. Featuring a charming illustrated bookplate of a 'Roy and Nina Merley' tipped to the front pastedown of each volume. The Merleys owned Plaish Hall, Shropshire. This is a stunning Grade I Tudor house, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The home once belonged to Judge William Leighton, who was an amateur poet and sixteenth century composer. The house, as it stands now, was built in two stages for Leighton, who was presiding over a trial of prisoners whilst the home was being completed. Roy and Nina Merley owned the house for thirty-five years and were responsible for reinstating the Tudor style gardens and renovating the house to its former glory. Their bookplate has an image of the house in the background, with a blackbird eating a worm in the foreground. Collated, complete with: Numerous in-text illustrations, four copper plates, and twenty seven full-page plates (one of which is folding) to volume I. Numerous in-text illustrations, four copper plates, and six full-page plates to volume II. Small split to head of spine to volume I. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown of each volume. Bookseller's label tipped to rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound.
