Very Good. Inscribed by Gansevoort's sister to Judge William James Wallace. Wallace was Bound in handsome, contemporary 3/4 red leather over marbled boards. Spine ruled in gilt. Light rubbing. Top edge gilt. 333 p., [24] plates (portraits); 22 cm. Title page lists 1875, but the dedication page states second ed, 1882. This is the Second edition published in 1882 with an additional preface by the Gansevoort's sister not in the 1875 edition. The collected letters of Col. Gansevoort, a cousin of Herman Melville. He served in the 5th U.S. Artillery at Antietam and Second Bull Run during the war, and later commanded a fort at Pensacola. U.S. artillery--5th regiment--1861-1901. William James Wallace (1837-1917) was a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and of the United States Circuit Courts for the Second Circuit and a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York, and Mayor of Syracuse.

Laidley was in the ordnance corps and is in their hall-of-fame. He was also an inventor of weaponry, etc. ) This is the Second edition published in 1882 with an additional preface by the subject's sister not in the orignal 1875 edition. (The title page states 1875). Bound in original three-quarter leather with all edges gilt. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece and photogravure plates. Not an ex-library copy. The leather is rubbed at the corners and along the edges of the spine panel but the binding is tight. There are some stains on a couple of the contents pages. Very good-condition.
