Seller's Description:
8vo. 22.5cm, fourth edition, in two volumes, xxviii, 348 & 384pp., 2 engraved frontis portraits, 2 folding plates, engraved view & folding plan (of Nottingham Castle) plates, original fine grain green linen backed marbled boards, paper labels, slightly dust worn but a fine sound set John Hutchinson (1615-1664). English Puritan, soldier and regicide, born in Nottingham. A parliamentarian he was governor of Nottingham an successfully held the town (1643-45). Returned in 1646 to parliament for Nottingham, he was one of King Charles I's judges, and signed the warrant for his execution. He sat in the first council of state but alarmed at the ambitious schemes of Cromwell, ceased to take part in politics. At the Restoration he was included in the Act of Amnesty, but was later imprisoned in the Tower and at Sandown Castle on the groundless suspicions of treasonable conspiracy, and died. The Memoirs written by his widow for her children, was first published in 1806, revealed a delightful picture of a grave and courteous gentleman, wholly free from austerity and fanaticism. (CDB).
