Write that I desire M. Dcfeu.be instan'ly liberated. 1 make perhaps one more ungrateful--no matter 1 so much the worse for him; and, in similar eases, always apply to me: when I refuse, it is because it is impossible to comply." This anecdote is told by Mademoisle Pomtrincourt, afterwards Madame Defeu. During the early residence of the first consul in the Tuilleries, extra rdinary efforts wore made for tranquillzing La Vendee, and with that intent he collected from all quarters information respecting the true state of things. The principal leaders in La Vendee were also invited to Paris, in order to confer with the first consul. To h m a civil war seemed a fearful thing. The celebrated Georges Cadoui'al was allowed a pri vate audience, attended with circumstances which proved, that, if Bonaparte did not believe in men's virtue, he believed in their honour. General Rapp introduced Georges, leaving him alone with the Hist consul in the saloon, and retired to the cabinet. Their conversation seemed animated, and there was sometimes a good deal of anger in tones and gestures.
