Seller's Description:
Fair. First edition. Volume Two only. Fair in original paper covered boards with spine nearly perished, spine label present but chipped/cracked, front and rear endpapers detached but present, both boards detached. This is second book of the vast, defensive, three volume memoir by one of the most senior and controversial officers in Continental Army/United States Army. He has been characterized by the historian Robert Leckie as a general who "had never won a battle or lost a court-martial" and this volume catalogues several of his vindications in the face of charges that he abused his power or was negligent. He both held high offices and was tarnished by his intrigues: he was the most senior officer in the US Army after Washington and Hamilton and was first governor of the Louisiana Territory, yet he resigned his first commission due to corruption charges, was later proved to have been in secret negotiations with the Spanish to set up a fief of his own in Kentucky, was suspected of conspiracy with Aaron Burr to set up an independent nation in the West, and was court-martialed by James Madison, which is the concern of the first chapter of the book.
