Otherwise, clean, unmarked pages. Copper plate engraved portrait of Antoine Hamilton adjacent to title page in Volume 1. Portrait of Charles the Second in volume 2. Various additional copper plate engravings throughout both volumes. Overall, both volumes are in very good condition. Philibert, comte de Gramont was a French nobleman, known primarily as the protagonist of the Memoires written by Antoine Hamilton. His biographer, who was far superior to the comte de Gramont, relates the story of his hero without comment, and no condemnation of the prevalent code of morals appears, unless by an occasional touch of irony. The portrait is drawn with such skill that the count, in spite of his biographer's candour, imposes by his grand air on the reader much as he appears to have done on his contemporaries. In no other book is there a description so vivid, truthful, and graceful of the licentious court of Charles II. These two volumes are in excellent condition and make for an excellent addition to any personal library or collection. Please feel free to view our photographs of this exceptional pair.
