To enable them to attend (01e to their Ptudies, they l'tand in need ofa fuflicient fortune to relieve them from attention to iemporal concerns. They fiand in need of the labor of others to cloath, lodge, and noutilh them. They are above all othersr dependent on {ociety for that hate ofpeace and tranquillity fo necelfary to the progrefs offcience. They mull, therefore, be moni'ters Ofingratitude ifthey do not recognize that public au thority, withoutwhich fciences mufltbanilh. Putthe mofilearned member of the Royal Society into a defert or a forelt, and in another part put a country clown, and fee which of the two will fare befi, or fiand mofi in need ofthe help of others. But this is not all; Weilhaupt politively alferts, that flavery is the Offspring of the fciences and can it follow from iboh a pofition, that the molt fcientific are the freefi and mofi in dependent oi men? As from a variety of other palfages I knew that, ccording to the modern Spartaozu, no men were really enliggened, unlefs it Were the favages, or thofe who w'ifhed to carry us back to the farage Prate; I tranflated it thus Hence few want; if the fiij/z flop toward; Liberty - 1th: for thir reafon, that the fat/age; are the mofl enlightened of men, and per/yap; they alone are free but I took the pre caution to add the German text, Darum lind wilde, und in hiici'tken grad aufgekl'arte, vielleicht die einzige lreye menfchen) that each reader might give the fenfe he chofe to the original. Dr. Griffiths has done more, he has quoted that other text, in which Weifhaupt literally declares flavery to be the Offspring of the fciences he neverthelefs makes Weilhau pt fay, that fiwager and the fully enlightened are per hapr the onlyfree enen. This certainly approaches nearer to a literal tranflation, and the fentence taken in-the abfira???t may be more corre???t; my tranflation, however, is conformable to the fenfe of the difcourf???; but I have no objection to fubfiitute that given by Dr. Griffiths. Provided a n.b. Be added, to warn the reader ofthe nonfenfe of it, and the grofs contradi???tion it contains.
