Excerpt from Memoir of the Life and Writings of Rev. Jonathan Mayhew, D. D., Pastor of the West Church and Society in Boston, From June, 1747, to July, 1766 The following paragraph, from one of his publications, will fully express the views of Dr. Mayhew on this subject. I would not have it understood that I approved of the an cient laws made in the colony, which bore hard on the members of the church of England. It is my Opinion that they were unjustifiable, and I am sincerely glad they are no longer in force. It is the exclusive spirit of the episcopal clergy, their efforts in proselyting, their assumed superiority, their claims of a divine right to administer the ordinances and to dispense the doctrines of the gospel - and their evident design to establish the church of England here, or to have it enjoy the peculiar favor and support of the civil authority of these I do disapprove - and these I shall oppose. I have often said, and now again declare, that I esteem and highly honor many episcopalians, as persons of virtue, moderation, and candor; and I am desirous of living in friendship and good neighborhood with them, notwithstanding differences of opinion, if they will condescend to permit me.' It is lately said, that 'the church of England has been asleep since the time of Elizabeth.' But was it asleep in the days of James I., or of Charles I. And II., or of James II.? Was it asleep in the time of William III., or of Anne; or even in the days of George II. And III.? Certainly not. It was as watchful as ever. But the enlightened and liberal views which prevailed, owing to the writings of independent and honest men among the dissenters, have led them to des pair of making proselytes, as formerly; or of exercising the arbitrary power in ecclesiastical affairs, which was done under Elizabeth, James I Charles I. And II., or James II. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at ... This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
