Seller's Description:
Very Good Plus. Four Volumes. Complete Set. Overall, an excellent set. Volumes I and II were published in 1878 and are an early printing of the books first published in 1877. These two volumes have green decorative cloth boards. The boards are in very good condition. The gold graphics on the spines are very bright. The interiors are clean, no marks of any kind. Volumes III and IV were published in 1893 and are First Printings. These volumes have plum colored decorative cloth covered boards. Roberts Brothers made some effort to match the four volumes. Charles Sumner; s autograph is embossed on the front board of each of the four volumes. The design of the graphics is the same on all four volumes. There is no gold gilt on these latter two volumes. The hinges on these two volumes show signs of repair and are now tight. There are no exterior or internal marks on these two volumes except for the bookplate of the New-York Evening Post on the front pastedown of each volume. The bookplate depicts the front page of the newspaper for November 16, 1801. These four volumes present much rich material on the life of Sumner and include his own account of the major, frequently traumatic, events of his life. Both his memoirs and his correspondence are collected here. Best know for his outspoken leadership of the abolishionist movement, Sumner was at the center of Massachusetts and then national political life for more than half a century. These volumes present a detailed picture of an intelligent and enthusiastic political leader coping with some of the toughest ptoblems our country has ever faced.
