For anyone interested in business this is a great book. Even though the book was first published in the mid-80's, it's still timely because it traces the history of the founding, challenges and growth of the company that completely changed not just the fast-food business, but the entire food industry. There are chapters having to do with how the McDonald brothers were content with a single store, Ray Kroc's recognition of the franchise opportunity, partnering with the McDonald brothers and their subsequent buyout. The author goes on to reveal how McDonalds met challenges along the way, from kitchen layout, creating custom equipment, emphasis on quality, cleanliness and value, franchisee selection, menu decisions, involvement of franchisees in creating advertising and menu items, real estate leasing, financing, partnering with suppliers to create new foods, processes and procedures, domestic and foreign expansion, etc. There are frequent comments about other franchise businesses and their contrasting approaches to dealing with franchisees, fees, suppliers, successes and failures. If you have seen the movie I think it portrays Ray Kroc in a more negative light as a business predator than what is actually warranted, so the book is still worth reading. This could be a good case study book for business school students too. Highly recommended!
