Seller's Description:
Illustrated by Max Beckmann. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 0517550008. Cover is white with red lettering on front and spine. Pages are clean and tight. Lavishly illustrated with 47 color and 24 b/w pictures by Beckmann. Beckmann wa born in Leipzig, Germany in 1884 and died in New York City in 1950. During his lifetime his style evolved from the impressionism of his peers to his own, singularly symbolic, rich and savagely acute style. He witnessed both World Wars, and his paintings reflect this, both as a victim and as a witness; during WWI he volunteered as a medical orderly, seeing the bloody horrors of war at first hand. Lackner, a friend and patron of Beckmann's, chose these 71 works from 835 oil paintings, drawings, prints and watercolors, to chronicle and represent Beckmann's life, from his early days, through the ever changing path of his life, up until his death in the US in the mid-20th century.
