Not illustrated. 1884 Excerpt: ...plan seen in the image will not be in the centre of the rectangular image. From the position of the margin with reference to the centre can be deduced the relative position of the surfaces of the plan and ground glass. Fig. 11, is supposed to be either a plan or section of the two surfaces: o R being the surface of the ground glass; M the lens, the optical axis of which (c M) is at right angles to the surface, G H, and p L, the plan; s the centre of the plan, and c the centre of the rectangle, ruled on the ground glass; G R will be the image of the plan thrown on the glass, G and R being in the centre of opposite sides of the image. Now it is evident, on inspection of the diagram, that when B? is greater than G L, G C is greater than c R; that is, the edge of the plan at p being farther, than the edge at L, from the lens M, the image of p at R, is nearer the centre of the ground glass, than the image of L at G. By reasoning in this way, it will be at once suggested to the operator what movement in altitude or azimuth is to be given to the camera, to produce parallelism. This movement will throw the centres of the plan-image and ground glass off each other; they are made again to coincide as before, and thus, by repeated adjustment, coincidence of the centres and parallelism of the surfaces are ensured. It then only remains to produce coincidence of the sides of the rectangles by the rack-and-pinion motion of the lens and the screw for focusing the camera. The adjustment is now complete, and it is only necessary to remove the focusing-glass, and to slip the sensitive plate into the same place, to receive a correct reduced image. The time taken in this adjustment is about four minutes in the first instance, and one minute afterwards for each changu of plan, p...
