Further reinforcements of the enemy coming up all round, Major Browne ordered the retreat of the skirmishers back on the laager, in order to induce the enemy to come within range of the Maxim guns already in position at the corners. This was successfully carried out, and the action became general. The Matabele did not stand long before the Maxim fire, the Inyamandhlovu being the chief sufferers, and retreating to the kopjies, when three companies of Commandant Raaff's men and two companies of British Bechuanaland Police were sent out to cut off their retreat, in which they failed, as the enemy were already in the kopjies, which were close by. In this charge Regimental Sergeant-Major Dahm, of Raaff's Rangers, was killed, and Sergeant Dempsy and Trooper Robinson wounded. Then Commandant Raaff withdrew his men from under fire, and two of Kgama's regiments under Sekomi were sent out with orders to clear the kopjies, which they did effectively with great bravery and determination, in hand-to-hand fighting, killing and wounding large numbers of the enemy, with a loss on their side of IO killed and I 5 wounded. Fighting began about 9.30 a.m., and was all over by I p.m., with the enemy in full retreat. After this Mr. Farley was sent out to scour the country in the direction of the Matangwe river, in order to find a suitable road for the advance; but owing to the scarcity of water, the column being large and requiring a great deal, he failed to do so, but discovered a suitable position in open veldt, on one of the head waters of the_Inkwisi river, near the Empandine kraal, which he found deserted, and the column moved on there two days afterwards and fortified the position.
