In fact, the Grammar School boy from Lancashire has had weak lungs all his life, and they were nearly the death of him on more than one occasion. Here is his career, from apprentice to Captain, visiting ports all over the world and facing danger in surprising places. Later, he proved himself invaluable as a Marine arbitrator, and ended up as advisor to Petronas, the Malaysian national petroleum company, saving them millions. An eye for detail, a hunger for hard work and the ability to operate a good crew - these qualities took the author to the top. Add to that a canniness with darts and a dollop of ambition, and you'll see why he was called 'King of the South China Sea', in a life that's exemplary in so many ways.
