The second installment in Rhino's Mambo Mania series was probably not intended when the initial release was issued in 1995. Given the meteoric rise in the interest in all things musically Cuban, it is amazing it took them this long to compile what is essentially a compilation of tracks from other albums released in the U.S. This collection is more adventurous than the first and features a lot more excellent material: There's Machito recorded live in L.A. and Tito Rodriguez doing "Mango del Monte," the mambo that inspired ...

The second installment in Rhino's Mambo Mania series was probably not intended when the initial release was issued in 1995. Given the meteoric rise in the interest in all things musically Cuban, it is amazing it took them this long to compile what is essentially a compilation of tracks from other albums released in the U.S. This collection is more adventurous than the first and features a lot more excellent material: There's Machito recorded live in L.A. and Tito Rodriguez doing "Mango del Monte," the mambo that inspired Richie Valens to rock. We get the all stars such as Eddie Palmieri before he moved to New York and started Harlem River Drive (his "Colombia Te Canto" is the most amazing thing on this record), Celia Cruz's gorgeous "Caramelos" (which is the traditional melody that inspired "La Bamba," speaking of Richie Valens), Noro Morales' signature "Noro's Jump," Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, and Peres Prado. But more important are the awesome bands that were stars in Cuba and all but completely unheard of in the U.S.: Pia Leyva y Group Los Kimbos doing a steaming "Francisco Guayabal," the Joe Cuba Sextette, Celeste Mendoza's rumba in overdrive, "Mi Rumba Enchando Candelo," Abelardo Barroso y Conjunto Gloria Matancero with a commanding performance of "La Sitiera," and much more. While this awesome record may not provide the listener with a proper education in the history of Cuban music, it is a helluva party disc that will addict whoever gives it a spin to the mambo in particular and sending them careening into the aisles of CD shops looking to spend their hard-earned cash on more of what they get here. Once again, Rhino rules. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
