Excerpt from Marshall's Business Speller and Technical Word Book: For Business and Shorthand Schools The English language, in its entirety, includes more than a quarter of a million distinct word-forms, but very few persons commonly use more than two or three thousand of these. The general lesson in Parts I and II of this book present a study of some three thousand words of common or frequent use in the ordinary affairs of life. They have been specially and critically selected from the entire vocabulary of the language, with a view to the ex cluding, (1) all words of such simple spelling that no one is likely to misspell them, and (2) all words so infrequently used that their Special study would be unprofitable. Part III of the book consists of reference lists of various groups of technical words, alphabetically arranged for the convenience of stenographers and others who are employed where they may need to learn the spelling of auv of the groups. In the general test lessons of Part II, the lists for spelling study are printed in type corresponding in form to that of the standard typewriters.
