Five years ago, I saw A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE for the first time. By the end of the film, I was emotionally exhausted by the passion flowing from the screen. I?ve never felt a movie touch me is such a visceral way -- before or since. I was indifferent to the talents of both Marlon Brando and Tennessee Williams before viewing this amazing film.
This is a photo biography, written in English, French and German. Some of the photos are available in other books, but some are unique to this slender volume. The blurbs near the photos present an incredible amount of information.
Marlon Brando offered a number of quotable lines:
?The only thing an actor owes his public is not to bore them.? (Page 24)
?An actor is at most a poet and at least an entertainer.? (Page 48)
?I put on an act sometimes, and people think I?m insensitive. Really, it?s like a kind of armor because I?m too sensitive. If there are 200 people in a room and one of them doesn?t like me, I?ve got to get out.? (Page 97)
This book shows that Brando BECAME his character. THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON moviegoers complained, ?Where was Brando?? They were shocked to learn that he was almost continuously onscreen.
Until reading this book, I had no idea that Charlie Chaplin directed Marlon Brando in a movie: A COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG. Sofia Loren was the countess.
Other than the photos, my favorite part of this book was Brando?s life chronology. Happily, in Brando?s filmography, the reader is treated to lots of his film posters.
