These ships, termed "phantom ships," always sailed in the eye of the Sea cow, trichecus manatus--sea horse, or walrus, triehecus rosmarus--harpies, oceanides, buccentaurs--and hippocentanrs, were believed to infest, the neighbourhood of North, Meols during the fifteenth century. (Nichol's. London Magazine.) Wind; or ploughed their way with great velocity, making the smooth sea foam before their bows, when not a breath of air was stirring. This is mentioned by Geoffrey Crayon, and Thomas Moore, in their works, as being a traditionary belief amongst the people of the Netherlands. More of this curious matter is mentioned in " Franck's History of North Meols," published in 1701, (12mo.) "Tis thus the aged seamen dreams, When anchor'd in his tranquil home; In wand'ring fancy still he seems Through dark and stormy seas to roam." SEA GIPSIES. The Biajus are two races; the one is settled in Borneo, and are a rude but warlike and industrious nation, who reckon themselves the original possessors of the island of Borneo. The other is a species of sea gipsies or itinerant fishermen, who in small covered boats, enjoy a perpetual summer on the Eastern ocean, shifting to leeward from island to island, with the variations of the monsoon. In some of their customs this singular race resemble the natives of the Maldivia islands.
