Gald???s, realizing the limits imposed by narration in the first person, has in the other series followed the usual mode of narration in the third person. Hi tells us that upon finishing Trafalgar, he was quite undecided in regard to the plan of the remaining nine, not having even fixed upon their titles. The favor with which the public received La corte de Carlos IV served as a light and inspiration, and suggested, together with the complete development of the Episodios Nacio nales, the interconnection of the ten works, and the dis tribution of the subjects in such a way as to get as much unity as possible in the extreme variety required by this kind of narration. This linking together of the characters recalls the parallel feature Of the Com???die Humaine and of the rougon-macquart novels.
