I cannot dispute the general impression that this is the exhaustive, authoritative biography of Mao Zedong. It is obvious that much of the early life of Mao is known only through Mao's own reminiscences to Edgar Snow and others, but Terrill makes the most of the biased material in his analysis. As the source material expands, he makes full use of it, though some unconventional sources could be better cited. It is a measured assessment, neither hagiographic or damning, though it is clear that Terrill sees the outcome of his career as ultimately tragic for China.
My only objection is his irritating, inconsistent handling of personal and place names. He refers to Mao only as Zedong throughout his childhood - have biographers of Churchill ever been so mock-familiar as to refer to him as Winston? He refers to several persons by their translated names, particularly Jiang Qing as Blue Apple instead of her earlier name, Lan Ping. He mostly sticks to family name-personal name form, but reverses it for at at least one, though not for that person's brother. Worst of all, he persistently translates minor place names to the meaning of the Chinese characters, particularly Mao's birthplace Shaoshan as Music Mountain. There is no value in doing this. Mao lived within Chinese language, characters, place and personal names - it is sufficient to transfer the sounds to acceptable Latin forms, which Terrill does for major places like Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha and other (though not for Guangzhou, which he persistently writes as Canton). Would it be reasonable for a Chinese translation of an English work to convert Waskatenau, a minor Canadian place name, to "opening in the river bank", its meaning in Cree? Of course not, that is its name - requiring nothing further than the appropriate translation into Chinese characters.
Like I say this is an irritation more than a major flaw, but I find it hard to understand why an otherwise careful China scholar would stoop to such an eccentricity.
