"We are now ready for the first test. Open your papers at Test No. 1, and read the instructions out loud with me." Read, "You will be given eight minutes to work as many of the following examples as possible. You are not expected to be able to do them all. Write the answers directly underneath the examples. You will be marked for both speed and accuracy, but it is more important to have your answers right, than to try a large number of examples." "Close your papers. Are there any questions?" See that all the papers are kept closed during the following explanations. The examiner, particularly with the lower grades or with children of foreign parentage, may repeat the original instructions if necessary, but should guard against being led by questions into giving more extended explanations. The opportunity to ask questions on this first test is provided that the examiner may judge whether the children have taken in the instruction read. Some children do not understand what they read and need to have the instructions repeated orally. "Now please listen closely.
