During the interval between the Sikh wars, he filled the post of Deputy-Adjutant-General to the European forces at Bombay, Returning to England, by medical advice, in 1849, he proceeded again to India in 1851, and was appointed by Lord Hardinge Quarter-Master General to the British troops in India. In addition to his military services, in the course of which he has passed unharmed through more than twenty engagements, he has contributed to the history of his time memoirs of the Affghan and Ava campaigns. His more recent exploits will be found enumerated above, at p. 60. Heber (Reginald, D.D.) Bishop of Calcutta, Whs a native of Cheshire, and born in 1753. On obtaining his university degree, he proceeded on a tour to the East of Europe, where he collected materials for a histoiical and antiquarian work on Scythia, which was never completed. After some years' labour as a parish clergyman, he was appointed, in 1823, the successor of Dr. JIiJdlcton in the See of Calcutta, and on his arrival, proceeded on a tour of inspection through his diocese. He had scarcely been three years abroad, when his death, an irreparable loss to India, occurred during a journey to Trichinopoli.
