Having thus extracted from your class what was likely to be the first form of idolatry, you might, by a similar process of reasoning, show how men might gradually pass on to the worship of angels, and even devils; very useful animals, or very pretty ones, and even vegetables. Then you might ask what do we sometimes do when great men in this country die, in order to show our respect for them, and hand it down to other times? We make statues, and raise monuments to them; and having elicited this, you might say that statues of great men were made by people living long before Christ came, and that the ignorant part of mankind fancied that spirits dwelt in these stones. And what did they do? (Help the scholars with the answer.) They bowed down to them, and called even the stones gods. You ought now to question the children upon idolatry and idolatrous acts and customs, especially in their history as brought out in the bible, and perhaps the following manner might be suggested: --First remark to them that the Hebrews had no peculiar form of idolatry, but appear to have imitated the practices of others. Do you remember who went down to Bojourn in Egypt while Joseph was there 1 Jacob and his sons and their families.
