This book will delight those who love railroading and the Gilded Age. This period was unparalleled--and will never return. The wealthy had their own railway cars, or rented them on occasion, to travel in style. Current fashion would have it that this was a pure manifestation of greed and directly injured (victimized, in current parlance) those less wealthy--whether middle class or poorer. However, the percentage of national wealth and the actual dollars spent on these wonderful machines were infinitesimal overall, and the employment furnished in their construction, maintenance, and use continued for at least two generations. The technology brought about by their creation was considerable. Not too shabby. This book was beautifully produced with more than enough for the pure esthete and the engineer--pun intended. The picture of Paderewski on the platform of his (rented) car alone justifies the publication and its subject. The railroads drove this country and all countries forward in every way. They will yet again.
