SYNOPSIS: Of Parrington's Pulitzer Prize study of men and ideas in America, Henry Seidel Canby wrote: "This is a work of the first importance, lucid, comprehensive, accurate as sound scholarship should be, and also challenging, original in its thinking, shrewd, and sometimes brilliant...It is a genuine history of ideas, clearly seen, tirelessly followed, admirably analyzed. Indeed it is the book which historians and critics of American literature have been waiting and hoping for." In this volume Parrington treats of such makers of the American mind as Thomas Hooker, Roger Williams, Samuel Sewall, Increase and Cotton Mather, Jonathan Edwards, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Tom Paine, and Thomas Jefferson. Vernon Louis Parrington was born in Aurora, Illinois, in 1871, and was graduated from Harvard University. In 1908 he became Professor of English at the University of Washington. He died suddenly in 1929, at the height of his critical powers. His masterpiece, Main Currents in American Thought, in two volumes, The Colonial Mind (1620-1800) and The Romantic Revolution in America (1800-1860), appeared in 1972. The final volume, The Beginnings of Critical Realism (1860-1920) was published posthumously and in fragmentary form in 1930.
