There are few better gay mystery writers than Neil Plakcy (Joseph Hansen was the super craftsman in that genre). He knows how to write, has believable and well drawn characters. But why the big apocalypse as the climax, with situations suddenly turning unbelievable and unlikely? Better to have the climax represent epiphanies for the characters, Neil. In the long run, that's far more meaningful and exciting.
