This album, which predominantly features Mahler lieder, marks a regrettably inconsistent addition to baritone Christian Gerhaher's otherwise esteemed discography. Unfortunately, the poor qualities of the album have nothing to do with Gerhaher himself. In fact, his performance of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder (heard here in the composer's version for baritone and piano) is quite successful. Gerhaher's voice is deep and round while still wonderfully articulate. His tone captures the solemnity and gravity of the text without being indulgent or overly demonstrative. Problems arise, however, in Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. The version heard here is an arrangement for chamber orchestra written by Arnold Schoenberg. The thin, almost anemic texture does indeed sound like Schoenberg, but this is supposed to be Mahler, and this arrangement will likely disappoint many listeners who are more familiar with the warmer sound of the full orchestral accompaniment.
