Nelms's book is not new, but its lessons should still be useful for today's performer. Some of the elementary lessons of good showmanship have yet to be absorbed by a good number of magicians. This is doubly true for many young magicians today, who look for "no skill required" tricks, and who seem to think that a magician merely "does tricks". But in fact it is dogs and hookers who do tricks; magicians perform in order to entertain. Nelms reminds his reader of the fundamentals of performance as entertainment, and how this translates into what is specifically required of magicians.
