On the left of the site of the Temple, Mount Zion, now literally 'ploughed like a field, ' according to the words of the prophet, sloped into the deep valleys of Cedron on the one side, and into those of Hinnom and of Tophet on the other. There " the joy of the whole earth" is now laid bare, and mourneth: and " the mountain of Zion is desolate." But the days are coming when "the Lobd shall yet comfort Zion," and reign in that holy mountain. For He lovea it; and He says Himself that it cannot be removed. Tea! there will yet be heard in Zion the voice of melody and songs of rejoicing; when the howling of Hinnom shall have ceased; and the standard of the Lobd of Hosts shall wave on yonder height, where Chemosh reared his head as a sign over the lea of Bephaim and even to the distant hills of Tekoah beyond. Then a voice will cry as of old: "Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for the Lobd hath comforted His people, and hath redeemed Jerusalem;"--" and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God." But here the pilgrim need not dwell on modern objects in this sacred scene; neither should he seek for details. In vain will he look for Calvary, and for Golgotha, on the uneven surface of the hill upon which the City stands. Still less, could he, while pacing that holy ground, mark out the exact spot upon which the Cross was raised on that day of days most awful. For their places know them no more. And it is better for us that names like those should lie deeper in the heart than thoughts drawn from objects of sense.
