Upon observing psychotic patients up close, he started to think that psychiatrists were overlooking something in their analysis and interpretation of the condition. Later, as a doctor working at a psychiatric hospital where he had unlimited access to scores of psychotic patients, he became convinced that the mental health community needed to take a fresh look at the bizarre and ubiquitous phenomenon of psychosis. In a twist of fate, the psychological trauma from the sexual abuse he had endured as a child at the hands of a homosexual pedophile triggered a psychotic illness-bipolar disorder. He was able to observe psychosis from the perspective of his patients and made a discovery that would bring about a paradigm shift in our understanding of consciousness and the way we view mental illnesses: that the quantum world of science and the spirit world of religion are actually the same thing.
