Sadly, MTV Unplugged stands as Nirvana's last album. While it's an album of covers and old songs, it ranks as one of the band's most cohesive records. Sadly, MTV Unplugged stands as Nirvana's last album. While it's an album of covers and old songs, it ranks as one of the band's most cohesive records. Instead of relying on the trio's overpowering sonic force, Unplugged concentrates on Kurt Cobain's subtly shaded songwriting and Nirvana's deceptively simple musical power. Every version of their previously recorded songs, with the possible exception of "On a Plain," dramatically improves the original, and the covers reveal more about Cobain than he intended. I am a hardcore Nirvana fan, but this is the only album that contains even one song I don't like. First of all, acoustic guitar is a bad choice of instrument for rock, especially grunge. Second, I dislike bad covers of songs, but this is a rare case where a band covered their own song, yet made it worse. And third, there's no new material, everything is either a past Nirvana song, or Vaselines/Meat Puppets cover. So, I can proudly say as a collector of every single rare and official Nirvana songs, this is the only album I have deleted from my IPod.
