To be honest, the first 50 pages of Yourcenar's book are slow and challenging. You may be tempted to set it aside. If you are under 40, you may well be bored. Fear not. It is not, perhaps, a book that speaks most directly to the young. But for anyone in their 40s or older, it is an extraordinarily rich and powerful work, a triumph of historical inquiry and imagination, such that the reader must remind him or herself that this is, technically, fiction. Reminiscent of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (whom Hadrian is addressing), it mixes memoir, history, philosophy, and very-human failings and shortcomings, to present a portait of a man, his times, and the ancient Mediterranean world that will inspire further study and reading for years to come. The book's composition and Yourcenar's story are also of deep interest. If you read and enjoyed Robert Graves' justly famous and extraordinary "I, Claudius," book or TV series, you will likely be delighted by Yourcenar, as well.
