Luce is a strong debut CD from the titular San Francisco band fronted by singer/songwriter Tom Luce. The album is filled with catchy adult alternative radio fodder, featuring solid musicianship, Luce's fashionably plaintive vocals, and polished production values. The songs' lyrics are rather unremarkable, with vague attempts at Elvis Costello-like irony and sarcasm. The words are the only weak spot of otherwise instantly memorable tunes. Elements of funk, folk, reggae, and Beatlesque pop are represented, yet there is a consistency to the overall sound of the LP. Highlights include the catchy hooks of "Good Day" and "Long Way Down," and the John Lennon-ish groove of "Electric Chair." If Luce can continue writing songs as outstanding as those, the band has a bright future. ~ Mary Grady, Rovi
