Misleading pseudo-lo carb tripe
I *wish* I could give this negative stars but the system won't allow it. If you don't know much about a low carb diet and want to sabotage all of your efforts, buy this book. If you know a great deal about low carb diets and want to waste your money on ill-researched hearsay and garbage, buy this book.
If you want to learn about low carb diets, how to do them, the health benefits, and the science behind them; skip this book entirely - I know I can't mention other books in the review but all I can say is you would do better by googling the name Gary Taubes.
Some of the myriad of low points from this Low Carb ?Bible? :
-The "low carb" recipes aren't low carb recipes at all! they are recipes that contain the brand name foods of the book's sponsors! I knew it was a bad sign when an allegedly low carb recipe asks for a cup of sugar or a half cup of refined white all-purpose flour! What utter utter garbage. It is all to placate the book?s sponsors and to line all of the involved parties? pockets.
-Only half of the diets they call low carb in their book are real low carb diets. Many of them are only reduced-carb diets and OMG? the ?Neanderthin? diet!? Give me a break!
-The "design your own low carb diet" has the same AMA garbage about how you need to include 6 servings of fruit (um - what about all the fructose!? the worst sugar known to man!? fruit consumption should be strictly limited, especially in the early stages of the diet when you are establishing just what kind of carbohydrate load you can take on before it starts to impact your insulin levels negatively.) And the same misinformation about consuming at least two servings of "healthy whole grains" is in there. YOU DON"T NEED OR WANT "whole grains" on a low carb diet!! They say you need to consume fortified whole grains to get folate and vitamin B - what utter utter crapola! you can get more folate from dark green veggies and all the B vitamins you need from meat! Once you incorporate all of the diet-sabotage they have the audacity and ignorance and wanton stupidity to suggest (this was written by *nurses???* where did you go to school? Fisher-Price school of nursing!?) all of these high-carb additions to your low carb diet, you have racked up at least 80 additional grams of net carbs per day, your total being over 100g net carbs per day, and at that point you are no longer on a low carb diet by any stretch of the imagination.
-They make sure to include all of the poorly researched assumptions about low carb diets as if they were gospel, just to reinforce that the authors think that low carb diets are bad for you. They focus on a long laundry list of all the things that they say low carb diets cause without any scientific backing or, for the cosmetic items, simple solutions. They say they raise cholesterol ? that?s only a small part of the story ? they don?t tell you in this book that a good low carb diet can *improve* your lipid profile. They dwell on ketosis-induced halitosis without the simplest of solutions (eat parsley).
Please. I beg of you. If you ever want to understand what a low carb diet really is ? or if you just want to succeed at a low carb diet, DON?T read this book. This ?Low Carb Bible? is utter tripe. Google Gary Taubes.
