Do you remember the movie, Lili? Do you remember the Broadway musical, Carnival? They were both based on this touching story: the innocent waif unable to grasp the connection between the sweet puppets and their bitter maker - the man hiding behind the thin cloth backdrop. The book is darker than either the film or the musical, and its climax is more fulfilling than either of its progeny's attempts to portray it. It is my prayer that they don't try to make this into another movie, but that they leave it alone. In a lifetime I have only met one other person who had read this book - she walked with stars in her eyes and her feet about a quarter of an inch above the ground. As an adolescent many years ago, I stole this book from the library. I must send them a copy.
