Deborah Wiles voice is as strongly Southern as her charming small town of Hallelujiah, Mississippi. My summers were as idyllic and my memories similar to those of Ruby Lavender. I too was the first grandchild. Ruby's story is sweet, bitter sweet, and salty all at the same time. Struggling to make do without Miss Eula and knowing that a new grandchild was the cause, Ruby adopts a trio of chickens that they together saved from destruction and happily takes charge of caring for the resulting egg. Wiles' voice is child friendly, her lingo, purely Southern and her story far from sappy. Ruby's a keeper and Wiles is to be watched for future trips to the great state of Mississippi.
