A near-sighted gal forced to face life without her glasses in order to gain a good marriage by her stepmother. A man, injured in battle facing London society after a self imposed exile to finally claim a wife (or to shut up his mother?). They meet. One thinks he intends it so as he is put out by his "ugliness" due to a disfigurment that appears to be great in his eyes. She is clumsy - mostly due to her lack of sight - but also just is. While trying to gain her a husband, her stepmother runs through many eligible suiters that Clarissa promptly injures or affronts with her clumsiness. At a ball, a charming man dances with her (the disfigured hero) and teaches her gracefullness in the process. Attracted to each other - they are torn appart by her stepmother. During the course of the book, he plots and plans for hidden trysts to get to know her. In the process he wins her heart with his thoughtfulness at her lacks due to her glasses. He reads to her, he dines with her and he tries to find out who is attempting to kill her. He saves her two times in one day - only to offer marriage when caught in a sticky bind. It is as he wishes as he wants her anyway. She wants it so as well. But she is not put off by scandal as she has already lived one. While he goes behind her back to investigate and also holds off getting her glasses (after all, he does not want to be seen) in order to make sure the wedding goes forward - she gets herself new glasses and hides them from him as she wants him and fears being seen in them. They stumble through the days in this manner - he not wanting his disfigurement seen and she not wanting her glasses seen. He does not know she has already seen him as she is not truely blind, just near-sighted. There have been attempts on her life and they escalate. You think it is the evil stepmother or someone else that appears to have motive also. It will surprise who the person is that wants her dead and why. It all comes to a head and the issue is resolved with a minor twist - he never realizes she has been wearing her glasses for a while. Read to find out how they manage their true issue and what the resolution is. It is a good read and quite a charming story. This is a man any woman would be lucky to have in all he has done for her. Surely, she was the woman it was worth his expending his efforts and kindness.

Really good and really funny
The heroine is great. Funny and intelligent, but most of all makes her hero's head spin around. The poor guy doesn't know what hit him. Great for a long free weekend.
