But nothing he ever did luxuriated in orchestral color as much as Lost Horizon, represented here from its original film tracks from 1937. These are worth hearing despite the low-fidelity origins and source material: one can hear not only a composer starting to come into his own, but an entertainment genre discovering art and music and the virtues of both, all at once. For richness of texture and sheer unabashed romanticism, it remains probably the best score of its kind, and this CD is a welcome reference source, even if casual listeners would do better to go to Charles Gerhardt's 1975 recording of the suite (on Lost Horizon: The Classic Film Scores of Dimitri Tiomkin) for basic enjoyment of the music. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
